Views of an Antique Land is a project which aims to bring alive memories of Egypt and Palestine during the First World War through an interactive website and archive.

With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a team from Cardiff University have been holding roadshows throughout England and Wales to give descendants an opportunity to share old photographs and postcards and to recount the lives of service personnel, now long past. These memories are being digitised to include on a website and research resource.

With the project nearing completion, the Views of an Antique Land team are offering an invitation to join them in Cardiff at an evening lecture on Friday May 19 when Dr Rob Johnson of Pembroke College, Oxford, will speak on The Great War and the Middle East.

This will be followed by a one-day conference on Saturday May 20 when the speakers will include John Winterburn on the Great Arab Revolt Project and Use of Photography, Sarah Shepherd on Recollections and Representations of Cairo (1914/18) and the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, and Stuart Hadaway on the Palestine Campaigns of 1917.

Both events are free. Read the full conference programme and book tickets by clicking on the image below.
